President Bush calls the nation to prayer

Jack & Phyllis Poe, Oklahoma City Police Department Chaplains were officially responsible for the Clergy Response to the April 19, 1995 Murrah Building Bombing in Oklahoma City. They have spent much of the past 5 years assisting individuals in dealing with the prolonged aftermath of the bombing. The Poes have already been asked to assist in this tragedy and are awaiting transportation.

The world is stunned by the catastrophic events that unfolded on the morning of September 11, 2001. Four commercial airlines were hijacked and turned into missiles when they devastated twin towers at the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. The nation is left with an enormous aftermath of trauma, death and injury, which may take months or even years to determine.

This tragic day that will be forever marked in history as an entire nation became immobilized and terrorized both psychologically and physically. Confusion and disbelief overcome individuals as they struggle to come to terms with the horrifying reality of this national tragedy.

While each of us feel numbing shock and disbelief, “God is not surprised and is able to bring good out of this,” says Phyllis Poe. “We cannot humanly reason His sovereignty, but we can understand and know that God is in the middle of His people. We need to hang on and lean on Him during a time of trauma like this.”

Everyone deals with trauma differently. Some panic, some become ill, some laugh, and some turn to their faith. While countless professionals in many fields are actively seeking answers and meeting endless needs, you may ask yourself what you possibly could do to be of any assistance. God does hear your prayers. Jack says “God’s grace is like adrenalin, it kicks in when we need it.”

You Can Pray

  • For the survivors and family members of victims - for wisdom, common sense, that they will not panic, but trust.
  • Rescue people and their families - they will work long hours and see difficult things. Pray that they would receive support and encouragement as they begin to process what they are experiencing.
  • Pray that we, as a people, would not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good
  • Pray that in this senseless evil, that anger would not turn into rage.
  • Pray for the United States government.
  • Pray for President George Bush that he would have wisdom to handle this situation.

God is greater than this evil and He cares about each and every individual who has been affected by this. Our prayers are required by thousands of individuals. Some of you desire to pray and don’t know how or wonder if your prayers will be heard. Prayer is simply talking to God and expressing what is on your heart. He loves you and desires for you to communicate with Him.
